The life of an intern at Purplefish: a reflective blog
Before starting my internship at Purplefish, I knew very little about the world of PR, marketing and communications. Purplefish has given me the opportunity to dive deep into the industry. Six weeks later, I've gained a whole new appreciation for the creativity, strategy and collaboration that goes into every campaign.
One of the things that stood out most was how every client is different, with each project requiring a tailored approach. No two days were the same, which kept the experience varied and exciting.
My first project was creating an animated video for Purplefish's GEO and AIO guide. After experimenting with the platform, building a storyboard and refining the design, it was incredibly rewarding to see the finished video come together. Throughout my internship I continued with my work for Purplefish, writing blog content and designed social media graphics that aligned with the agency.
Working on the St Pauls Carnival Elders' Brunch was a great opportunity. It was inspiring to be involved in an event that celebrates the rich heritage and legacy of Carnival. Supporting media communications before and during the event gave me valuable insight into how marketing works alongside sectors like journalism and broadcasting to optimise event coverage. More generally, going on location, to St Pauls or Watershed for RTS, has been an exciting perk of the job.
Alongside this I worked across a range of client accounts, compiling media outreach lists, curating influencer databases, conducting LinkedIn audits and researching social media content. A highlight was creating a social media content planner for a client, as I conducted research and reviewed their client base to come up with some fresh ideas.
Before joining Purplefish, I hadn't realised just how many different skills marketing brings together. I've learnt the importance of clear communication, consistency across a brand, attention to detail and staying adaptable in a fast-moving industry.
Just as memorable as the work was the team. Purplefish boasts a supportive culture where collaboration is part of everyday life. From celebrating colleagues' achievements in fortnightly meetings to enjoying lunchtime picnics together, I felt welcomed from the very beginning.
Also, working at a certified B Corp also gave me a new perspective on business. It was inspiring to see how Purplefish balances client work with its commitment to social impact, volunteering and environmental responsibility throughout the year.
My biggest takeaway has been the importance of creativity. I’ve learn that marketing is about dynamic thinking, as we solved client problems, told stories and adapted to challenges. Seeing how Purplefish is embracing AI through innovative marketing strategies has been especially fascinating.
Looking back, my internship has been an invaluable learning experience. I've developed new skills, built my confidence and gained a much clearer understanding of the industry. I'm excited to take everything I've learnt into the next stage of my career.
