Inside the UK’s semiconductor supply chain: Insights from CSconnected’s latest industry event
In March, we attended an event hosted by our client CSconnected at CS², bringing together over 40 organisations from across the UK’s semiconductor ecosystem.
The goal was simple: strengthen connections and explore how the UK can build a more resilient, competitive supply chain in one of its most strategically important sectors.
A clear theme throughout the day was the economic power of semiconductors. As a high-value, knowledge-intensive industry, it offers the UK a significant opportunity to capture greater value if the right support is in place.
The launch of the latest supply chain development programme funding call reinforced this, with a focus on strengthening relationships and boosting resilience across the sector.
Speakers from across industry and academia highlighted both innovation and ongoing challenges, from sustainable manufacturing to supply chain disruption and global demand drivers like defence and space.
What stood out was the strength of the ecosystem. Progress in semiconductors depends on close collaboration between businesses, researchers and policymakers.
The skills and scaling challenge
Two issues dominated the discussion: talent and growth.
The sector faces a persistent skills gap, alongside a broader challenge in attracting new talent. At the same time, many businesses struggle to secure the funding needed to scale in highly competitive global markets.
Both point to a need for clearer positioning of the industry, its opportunities, and its impact.
Why it matters
For us at Purplefish PR, the path forward is clear: the UK semiconductor sector has a strong story, but it needs to be told more effectively.
As highlighted in a discussion during the event, attracting future talent will depend on how well the sector communicates its purpose. Unlike industries that naturally capture imagination, like space with rockets and spacesuits, semiconductors must work harder to tell a compelling story, one that resonates not just with students but with the wider networks that shape their career choices.
Because growth in deep tech isn’t just driven by innovation, it’s driven by visibility, understanding and connection.
